EDITOR’S NOTES
Facial cleansing (makeup removal) in K-beauty: comfort-first clarity that boosts your whole routine
Facial cleansing isn’t just “washing.” It removes makeup, sebum, pollution and layers of SPF — while keeping skin comfortable. If cleansing is too aggressive, skin often reacts with tightness, redness or even more oil production. If it’s too weak, a film remains and pores can look more pronounced.
The most reliable approach is double cleansing: first step oil/balm (makeup + SPF), second step gel or foam (final cleanse). Then follow with a toner / essence and build the routine to match your goal: serum, cream, and in the morning always SPF. For a quick overview of steps, open routine order.
Makeup + SPF removal (evening)
A cleansing oil or balm dissolves makeup and long-wear SPF layers without rubbing. Ideal as step one of double cleansing.
Gentle cleansing without tightness
Look for a gentle formula and ideally a low pH cleanser. Gel or foam should cleanse — not “squeak”.
Pores, blackheads, texture
Consistency + gentleness beats aggressive cleansing. A light massage helps; add a supportive step occasionally (enzymes, wash-off mask).
How to cleanse in the morning and evening (no guesswork)
- Morning: gentle gel/foam for your skin type, then toner and always SPF for the day.
- Evening: oil/balm → gel/foam. Then layer: toner → serum → cream.
- Micellar water: think of it as a quick helper — for a clean finish, rinse and ideally follow with a gel/foam cleanse.

How do I know I’m cleansing too aggressively?
Typical signs are tightness, redness or a “squeaky-clean” feel right after washing. Try a shorter cleanse, lukewarm water and a gentler gel/foam. For more sensitive skin, start with Sensitive & reactive skin.
Do I need double cleansing every day?
Not always. It makes the most sense in the evening when you wear SPF and makeup. If you don’t wear SPF (or you apply minimal layers), one gentle step is often enough. Comfort and consistency matter most.
Want to take it further? Open gentle cleansing & exfoliation and as a supportive step consider face masks. A little — done regularly — makes the difference.
